Lindsey Hernden hit a floater with four seconds left to cap a 52-50 come-from-behind road win for Romeo over Warren Cousino in the girls basketball season opener for both teams Tuesday night.
After trailing the majority of the first half, Romeo found itself in a deep hole as it fell behind by 10 early in the third quarter. But it fought back and managed to take the lead late in the third, which it held until Cousino tied it at 50 on Natasha Baetiongs jumper with 17 seconds left.
With plenty of time remaining, Romeo coach Connie Hernden called a timeout and drew up a play for her daughter Lindsey.
On the last play we wanted to spread everyone out and let Lindsey drive to the rim to score, kick it out or get fouled since Cousino was in the penalty, Hernden said.
There was no need to kick it out or go to the line as Hernden blew by her defender and into the paint for an open look.
It was a great matchup with two of the best teams in Macomb County, Hernden said. When we were down early in the third, Lindsey and Chelsea Malburg provided a spark on offense that helped defensively spark the team.
Then we went on a scoring drought in the fourth quarter, but we were able to make key plays and come up with key rebounds at the end of the game.
Hernden finished with a game-high 16 points. Jodie Bosheers added 11 points and Malburg recorded a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) for Romeo (1-0).
Haley Hoffman led Cousino (0-1) with 13 points.
