Geek galore: MUET organises conference on emerging technology

HYDERABAD: Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) received more than a 100 paper submissions for a three-day international conference, Wireless Sensor Networks for Developing Countries, which began on Tuesday.

“We picked 23 papers from the submissions,” said Prof. Bhawani Shankar Chowdhary, the chief organiser of the conference, which included five technical sessions, four keynote speeches by well-known academics, a poster competition, a symposium and three tutorials on emerging fields in technology.

“Wireless Sensor Networks are making environments more pervasive and ubiquitous,” observed the head of Pakistan Science Foundation, Prof. Manzoor Soomro. “These networks have helped us in making substantial advancements in the fields of agriculture, infrastructure, health and energy.”

Prof. Abdul Wahab Bin Abdul Rahman from International Islamic University, Malaysia, spoke about the challenges and opportunities developing countries face in using wireless networks. A researcher from the University of Malaga, Spain, Prof. Javier Poncela, pointed out that communicating underwater using wireless acoustic systems was an important development in the field of wireless systems.

The pro-vice chancellor of MUET, Prof. Dr Muhammad Aslam Uqaili, felt that the event was a means to facilitate dialogue between major industry players, entrepreneurs and academicians in the field. “They are presenting on some of the recent innovations in fields of computer and software engineering, electronics, telecommunication, energy management, simulation and modelling,” he added.

The conference was organised in collaboration with International Islamic University, Malaysia, Erasmus Mundus Strong Ties Programme, Higher Education Commission and Pakistan Science Foundation.
