The Messiah to be performed for 36th time beginning in Blanding on December 8

May 5, 2015

A San Juan County holiday tradition will continue this week as Handel’s The Messiah, featuring a choir and live orchestra, will be performed in Blanding on December 8. The performance is set to begin soon after 7 p.m. at the Blanding LDS Stake Center, 900 North 200 West.

A second performance will take place in Monticello on the following Sunday at the Monticello North LDS Chapel, 367 North 200 West. It begins at 7 p.m.

Both performances are free to the public.

Beginning with a performance in Blanding in 1978, The Messiah has been performed in San Juan County for 36 years. Over the years, hundreds of local musicians have taken the opportunity to perform in this holiday classic.

George Frideric Handel used Old Testament scripture as the text to commemorate the birth of Jesus with some of the most stirring music ever written. His oratorio was first performed in 1742.

For the 2013 performance of The Messiah, a choir of 78 local singers will participate, including 14 soloists. They are accompanied by a live orchestra of 16 musicians.

Derryl Jack returns for another year as the conductor of the performance. Jack has been involved in The Messiah over the years, including singing in the very first performance in Blanding when he was a high school student.

Jacqui Moses is the organist, providing the main instrumental voice to a very demanding score.

Male soloists this year include Carl Hunt, Joe B Lyman, Mark Bake, Brett Peterson, Michael Blake, Ryan Crowley and Craig Crippen.

Female soloists include Emma Moses, Kim Toleman, Alynn Mitchell, Ellen Nerdin, Janet Lowe, Maxine Deeter and Jaqualine Redd.

The choir and orchestra includes members from Montezuma Creek, Blanding, Monticello, Eastland, La Sal, Moab and Provo.

Light refreshments will be served after the performance, which should last just more than an hour.
